Despite the wealth of Venice and the power of Rome, to think of Renaissance Italy is to think, first and foremost, of Florence, the city that led all other Italian cities in both daring and achievement... It was a city of crimes, violence and revolutions. But there was also a fundamental continuity to Florentine life that enabled (people) to go about their business with reasonable confidence.
